Indonesian Silver Hair Visa vs. Retirement KITAS & KITAP: A Comparative Guide for Retirees

Indonesia is quickly becoming a top retirement destination for people worldwide, known for its beautiful landscapes, warm weather, and vibrant culture. In response to growing demand, the Indonesian government offers several visa options tailored for foreign retirees, including the newly introduced Silver Hair Visa and the well-established Retirement KITAS and Retirement KITAP. Here, we explore the key features of each option, helping retirees determine which visa aligns best with their needs and lifestyle goals.


1. Overview of Each Visa Type

  • Silver Hair Visa: Launched in 2023, the Silver Hair Visa is Indonesia’s latest offering for long-term foreign residents. Targeted specifically at retirees, it grants a stay of up to 10 years and requires a significant financial commitment.

  • Retirement KITAS (Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas): The Retirement KITAS is a temporary residency permit that allows foreigners over 60 years old to stay in Indonesia for one year, with the option to renew annually. The KITAS provides a simpler, shorter-term solution for retirees.

  • Retirement KITAP (Kartu Izin Tinggal Tetap): The Retirement KITAP is a permanent residency permit designed for foreigners who want to settle in Indonesia more permanently. It follows the Retirement KITAS and grants five years of residence, with renewal available every five years.


2. Eligibility Requirements

Silver Hair Visa:

  • Age: Typically, applicants must be over 60.

  • Financial Requirements: Statement of commitment that the applicant will deposit funds in an account in his/her own name worth at least US$50,000 (fifty thousand US dollars) in a state-owned bank and Proof of income or benefits with a minimum value of US$3,000 (three thousand US Dollars) per month.

Retirement KITAS:

  • Age: Applicants must be over 60.

  • Financial Requirements: Monthly income requirements are usually lower than the Silver Hair Visa, making it more accessible (needs to have proof of pension of equivalent to USD 3,000)

  • Additional Restrictions: KITAS holders cannot work and needs to hire indonesian helper. 

Retirement KITAP:

  • Retirement KITAP requirements are the same as retirement kitas but retirement kitap can only be applied for after the applicant has renewed their Retirement KITAS at least twice. After meeting this requirement, they can apply for a Retirement KITAP valid for 5 years.


3. Duration and Renewability

Silver Hair Visa:

  • Duration: Up to 10 years, providing a long-term solution without the need for frequent renewals.

Retirement KITAS:

  • Duration: 1-year validity.

  • Renewability: Can be renewed annually up to five times before a KITAP application is possible.

Retirement KITAP:

  • Duration: 5-year validity.

  • Renewability: Renewable every five years, offering near-permanent residency status in Indonesia.


4. Financial Requirements

  • Silver Hair Visa (applicant need to deposit the amount of eq USD 50,000 in Indonesian state owned bank.

  • Retirement KITAS applicant dont have to deposit any fund in Indonesian state owned bank, just proof of pension fund or monthly income from anywhere in the world amounting eq USD 3,000.

  • Retirement KITAP same requirements as retirement kitas.

 

Silver Hair Visa, Retirement KITAS, And Retirement KITAP can include their family member as dependent (wife, husband, kids as long as the kids are below 18).
