The Indonesian government is once again strengthening its immigration monitoring system by introducing a new policy that requires biometric photo capture for all foreign nationals seeking to extend their Temporary Stay Permit (ITAS) or Visit Stay Permit (ITK). According to Circular Letter No. IMI-417.GR.01.01 of 2025, the Directorate General of Immigration has confirmed that as of May 21, 2025, all applicants must appear in person at the immigration office to complete the biometric process, replacing the previous online data submission system.
This move comes in response to the growing complexity of immigration violations, including overstays, misuse of stay permits, and failure to report presence. With the increasing number of expatriates and international tourists contributing to Indonesia’s economy and culture, the government sees an urgent need to strengthen verification mechanisms to ensure that immigration data is more accurate and trustworthy. Physical presence for biometric capture is a crucial step to ensure transparency and to minimize the risk of fraud or misuse.
The new policy also has a direct impact on foreign nationals living in Indonesia. They must now be more proactive in scheduling visits to the immigration office in their respective regions and ensure all documentation and biometric data are complete and valid. Failure to comply may delay the extension process or even lead to rejection. Therefore, understanding and complying with this policy is essential to maintain valid stay permits and support national security.
Beyond enhancing identity verification, the biometric policy is expected to align Indonesia more closely with international standards in immigration management, while also improving law enforcement through centralized and reliable data. This move underscores the government’s commitment to modernizing immigration services and safeguarding national sovereignty.
Foreign residents are strongly encouraged to stay updated with official announcements from the Directorate General of Immigration and to promptly adapt to the new procedures. This will help ensure a smooth and hassle-free ITAS and ITK extension process, while contributing to a safe, orderly, and professional immigration environment.
